What If I Lived My Life Like a Movie?

Back in May my friend and I decided to challenge each other to create one thing a day for a week.

  • Only for us.

  • Only based on that day.

  • No pressure.

  • Just create it and share it with each other.

I had felt this nudge for a while to take all of the videos I accumulated in a day and compile them into one so I had something to look back on.

Because I’ve asked myself (on many occasions)…

  • What did I even do with the kids when they were X years old?

  • What did a day in our life look like?

  • Was I even there? Present? How did I show up?

(Plus I’m always video dumping on my family each day and thought what if I gave them something fun that shows what we did?)

So during this challenge, I rounded up the videos I had taken > found a template on Capcut with music that fit the vibe of the day > dropped them in and > (at first) just enjoyed them for myself.

Here’s an example of one of my first videos:

I kept the practice going for a week past our challenge… and then I stopped…

I let the practice slip and quickly noticed a shift in my mood too.

  • I went from seeing special moments throughout our day

  • to being so in it that it often overwhelmed me.

When I brought the practice back again it helped me see “We have some pretty magical days.”

Which led me to notice the little (cinematic) details even more:

  • Sophia’s little fingers holding onto my hand.

  • Jack cracking up so hard he can’t catch his breath.

  • Either of the kids having big feelings (because that’s real life.)

  • The way the light streams into our house or the way the summer wind blows our dog’s hair.

It’s not a massive production. Just a few seconds where I pull my phone out, open up cinematic mode and shoot. Some days I take tons of videos… today I’ve taken one.

The point is to capture what I want to remember.

This simple challenge has become a relaxing gratitude practice not just throughout my day but at night too when I put the videos together as Sophia falls asleep next to me. It’s helped me find peace, awareness and presence in my days.

…. Not to mention it’s a lot of fun

  • It's fun to find a template on Capcut that has music that fits the vibe of the day.

  • To rewatch the videos I’ve taken and pick the “this” moments I never want to forget to add into it.

  • To see the kids interest, snagging my phone to “get a shot for the video” and watching them back every few days in our shared Photo Album.

  • And to strengthen that muscle of noticing each day- getting creative with new shots whenever I see something.

It’s helped me simplify my days- seeing what matters vs. the shoulds. Taking the videos only for myself- not for likes, applause or anyone else.

So I thought you might want to create your own practice too↓
