Minecraft IRL Activities
The 22 things we've done to bring Minecraft to life
My kids are obsessed with Minecraft right now… and as an unschooling family… it’s GREAT! Because I can take that interest and turn it into activities, trips and fun ways to connect their love to learning….. in a natural way.
How we’ve brought Minecraft to life:
At the time of creating this “curriculum” (aka a list of activities we can intentionally reach for) my kids are 5 and 6.5- so this list is tailored to what they’re working on and are able to do.
But here’s how I made this list so you can make one for your family and their interests too:
I told ChatGPT the kids ages and what they like and then asked it to help me come up with activities, recipes and places we could go related to Minecraft.
Sometimes I’ve done this in reverse, where I’ve had an activity in mind and headed that same Minecraft IRL chat saying: “We’re going to do XYZ- make it Minecraft.”
I also Googled more ideas and scoured Pinterest for things that fit into my main categories: crafts, food and activities.
Lastly, I compiled it all into a GoogleDoc that I could reference each day when we’re planning what to do.
The activities list:
Food Activities
Potion Drinks
Mix up these drinks and talk about the powers they give you. Then take a sip and “experience” those powers.
Lemonade (yellow = speed potion)
Berry water (red = health)
Blue sports drink (night vision)
Bread (Iconic Minecraft Food)
Bake simple bread or rolls.
Talk about 3 wheat = 1 bread in Minecraft.
Shape into squares if you want to lean in.
Craft Activities
Reading Activities

Travel Activities
* Alot of these are specific to where we live- but if you ask ChatGPT to name places you can travel within X hours that would bring Minecraft to life it can find what’s nearest you!
Natural History Museum
“Today we’re exploring the real world that Minecraft was based on. Everything we see here exists somewhere in the Minecraft world.”
Mission: “Find the mobs, ores, and biomes hidden in the museum.”
🪨 ROCKS & MINERALS = MINING
“This is the mining biome.”
“What would this drop if we mined it?”
“Is this common like coal or rare like diamond?”
“What tool would we need to mine it?”
Point out:
Quartz
Gold
Iron
Sparkly crystals = amethyst vibes
“How deep underground do you think this forms?”
🦖 DINOSAURS = ANCIENT MOBS
“These are ancient mobs from long before players existed.”
“Would this mob be peaceful or hostile?”
“What biome would it live in?”
“What would it drop?”
“How many Minecraft blocks tall would this be?”
🐾 ANIMALS = MOBS
“Every mob belongs to a biome.”
“What biome is this?”
“Would it spawn during the day or night?”
“Is it passive, neutral, or hostile?”
Examples they’ll recognize:
Wolves
Bears
Bats
Birds
🌎 EARTH LAYERS = MINECRAFT DEPTH LEVELS
“Minecraft copied how the real Earth works underground.”
“Where would diamonds spawn?”
“Where would lava be?”
“Would caves form here?”

“How would we get here?”
“What kind of mobs would live here?”Ohio Caverns

Assign roles:
🧭 Jack – Lead Scout
🗺 Sophia – Corridor Mapper
🧠 You – Survival Strategist
🛡 Collin – Defender
Mission: “Find the ancient base before nightfall.”
🪨 LEVEL 1: FIRST CORRIDOR
When you enter the rock walls: “These aren’t natural. Someone shaped this stone.”
Challenge 1:
Count how many narrow passages you can find.
Decide which one feels like a trap.
Choose the safest route.
“Would mobs spawn here?”
“Where would we place torches?”
🏛 LEVEL 2: THE CARVINGS
When you see carved stone faces:
“These are ancient player markings. They were here before us.”
Challenge 2: Create a backstory:
Who built this? Were they peaceful? What happened to them?
“Was this a base… or a dungeon?” “What loot would be hidden nearby?”
🧱 LEVEL 3: SECRET BASE SEARCH
Find a rock overhang or recessed area.
“This could be our shelter. But is it defensible?”
Challenge 3: Design your base:
Sleeping area
Furnace location
Farm location
Secret entrance
“Where would skeletons shoot from?” “Is there high ground nearby?”
🕳 LEVEL 4: THE SQUEEZE-THROUGH PASSAGE
When you find a tight corridor:
“Creepers like tight spaces.”
Move slowly.
“Spider above.”
🏔 FINAL MISSION: CLAIM THE LEDGE
Climb to the highest accessible rock point.
“High ground gives advantage.”
“Did we survive Day 1?” “Where would we expand tomorrow?” “Was this early game or mid game?”
☕ Back in the Car
Hand out snacks
“Health restored. Hunger restored. New biome unlocked.”
My Review
We’re still working through these ideas as I type this. But so far, just knowing:
Where Minecraft comes up in our everyday life
How it relates to activities we’re already doing
How to talk about it correctly when I do bring it up
And that I have a tool to make anything Minecraft at the drop of a hat
Has made this so fun! Every activity hasn’t been a hit but it’s been nice to connect with them and what they’re interested in.

Such fun ideas, thanks for creating and sharing!
I don't have a little one at home anymore but I wish I did...these are so incredibly fun!
