If you're a podcaster.... you're a writer.

How podcasting has strengthened my writing skills

If you're a podcaster, creative, or somebody who has thoughts that they're craving to share: you're a writer…. You just might not realize it yet.

In my process of moving over to Substack and transitioning the way I podcast and create and show up, I've realized how much of a writer I am…

Although it's not the traditional way you would think of “writing.”

I am an audio person first.

  • Staring at a blank page and trying to type just doesn't work for me.

    • I've gotten better with that over time by creating in this way.

But all in all, the way that I create best, the way that I write best, is by speaking first.

By sharing what I have to say in a real, authentic, truthful, conversational way and then in taking that transcription… I am able to write.

And I think that's a common misconception in the writing world…

(and a beautiful byproduct of the creative space)

That we can look at these mediums, not just for what they originally were.

I don't look at podcasting as what we think of “podcasting.”

I look at it as a way to capture my thoughts through spoken word.

And writing doesn't have to just mean writing with a pen and paper or typing into my computer. I can still be writing even if I'm speaking.

I think that's the beauty of what I've uncovered and then shared with my community and watched them uncover too.

The impact your spoken words have on a page…

I did a guest interview a couple of months ago with my good friend Holly Haynes, where I used the transcription as the written part of the Substack post.

Holly's response to that finished product was: “Wow, Megan, you're such an amazing writer.”

And I had to respond back and be like: “Holly, I didn't write anything. I just took your words and put them on the page.”

And I think it's just such a clear example of how our words, stories and experiences have such potency, meaning and power- regardless of the medium they were first created in.

There's a lot of intersection between podcasters, creatives and wanting to write a book.

But sometimes that can feel really far-fetched.

That's why this aha is so beautiful. It shows that it’s not as out of reach as it feels…

Because guess what? You're probably already doing it.

If you are talking and sharing or if you have ideas in your head that you've been craving to get out there, then you're already doing the writing.

Or vice versa

If you're already writing, then to be able to talk and share it is as simple as reading what you've written.

Sometimes we can get pigeonholed into thinking there's only one right way to do things…

When in reality, we could already be doing them if we tune in to what works best for us.

A Writing Prompt for You:

I hope you can now see that that goal you've been trying to reach of: becoming a writer, author or podcaster, doesn't have to be done in the traditional way.

  • That there’s no “one right way” to do this- just your right way.

  • That writing can be as easy as talking, sharing and transcribing.

    • And that you may already be doing all of this…

Take a moment to sip your tea or coffee and reflect on that goal you want to reach and how you might already be achieving it in a way that feels SO easy to you.
