Taking the summer off
A slow philosophy on creating
It’s been 59 days since I last wrote here on Substack.
Not because I don’t enjoy it.
Not because I’m on a different platform.
But because I’ve been living.
May and June were travel months for us.
We spent time learning to surf in South Carolina, exploring the wilderness in Alaska and surfing (and working) in Texas.
As an unschooling/worldschooling family- travel is a top priority for us.✈️
And during this time of not only travel but creating for myself (watercoloring, painting, redesigning the outside of our house) and taking on a new consulting client- I’ve noticed my creative capacity here shift.
I went from the words spilling out of me and craving this outlet to my attention being focused on new activities in my life.

Contrary to the “you’ve got to be consistent” mantra- this shift didn’t make me feel anxious….
Instead I felt tuned.
Some days (like today) I feel this ping that I need to create…
Like an itch I’ve gotta scratch. I have something to say- even if it’s not fully formed until I open up a draft and start typing.
And other days I don’t even think about it. Either my tank is on E, I’ve focused on different creative outlets or I feel at peace with where I’m at right now.
I think, creating in spaces that build over time vs. disappear in 24 hours, has helped me too.
I feel unrushed because I’ve seen that what I put out there can be found years later.
(i.e. here, on Youtube, my mini-courses)
My potency supports more people than my frequency does.
↓ I’d love to see the narrative shift from ↓
“create or you’re ‘behind/forgotten’ ”
↓ to ↓
“create when you have something to say.”
Yes there’s something to be said about 1% progress everyday by working on your craft.
But also- couldn’t a walk through your town inspire you to create something?
What happens when you get some space from your craft? Do you see it in a new light with a new love when you come back to it?
And what other activities are you doing that are strengthening your skills without you realizing it?
i.e. playing pretend with your kids, watching an inspiring movie, laughing at a witty friend.
Yes- I am a creative who has not been creating HERE this summer… but I’m ok with that. 👍🏻
