Breaks are a natural part of my process. On the surface it might look like multitasking, but I can feel when I need to step back from whatever I'm working on to clear my head and gain some perspective. I might jump to another project that requires different thinking/skills, take a walk, cook or clean something, or unplug entirely and read. Just yesterday I checked off an item on my Feb action list by finishing a reread of To Kill a Mockingbird. Amazing book! Point is, I wholeheartedly agree with you, and do this regularly.
My whole life. Began focusing on art as a kid, earned a scholarship to Art Academy in LA. Caught the travel bug and took a major detour into hotel sales. Fifteen years and 23 countries later opted for 3rd reinvention and took over a small biz coaching biz that led to blogging and now here. In between lots of creative side gigs. Scenic route. 😉
Amazing!! I love the world reinvention AND that you’ve traveled so much! We homeschool our kids (specifically world school) and have just started to travel with them more! Where is your favorite place you’ve visited?
I actually REALLY love this!! And I appreciate you saying this. It is OK if we don’t have something to say, right?! Right! Good for you for doing other things with family and friends and create outlets elsewhere!
Aww I'm so glad this resonated with you Genevieve!! Have you ever found yourself stuck in that pressured spot of putting out a post or podcast for consistency's sake vs. creativity being the driving force?
Yes!! Which is why your words resonates so much. I have been podcasting almost a year and in the Substack space about 6 months now and although I am consistent with the podcast episodes, I feel this pull to post for consistency sake and there are sometimes I am just not creatively there. I need some time to actually be more creative rather than push a timeline (of which of course I’ve created for myself), but making sure I am pushing things out when I’m really in the zone.
I TOTALLY understand that! I came here from the podcasting space and not only was the weekly creation a grind for me- I found it was for my listeners too. Glad this helped open up a new aligned way for you to create!
Good job taking a break and glad you're finding the pace that works for you. I'm trying to lean on consistency by posting every 2 weeks but that's what's working for me right now. Appreciate the encouragement that it doesn't need to always be the same nonstop effort.
I think sustainability, whatever that looks like to each of us, is more important than specific timing. Hope you will share your Minecraft idea when you develop that one - my kids would love it!
Thank you so much for sharing what's working for you Susie!! I think it's so important for us all to see all the ways that things can work and then be able to have that discernment and confidence to tune into what works best for you- love that you're doing that!
Yes!! I was thinking about posting all of the homemade curriculums I've been coming up with based on my kids interests💕 I'll tag you when I do- are you a homeschool mom as well?
Not a homeschool mom, just a retired veteran making up for missing years of time with my kids, and looking for fun ways to get them off their screens :)
They love Minecraft but if we kick them outside they're so creative in the forts they build and games they play. Your idea would be a fun way to combine their interests.
And mine are super spread out: 17, 14, and 9. But Minecraft is one of the few things they play together; even the oldest one has fun and gets silly with it. Makes my heart happy.
BTW, love how creative you are, and I've learned so much from your posts and videos as I figure this Substack space out. Thank you!
That’s so cool that they all play together- I’ve loved that about the game. Mine are 5 + 6 and they collaborate and play so well together on the app (most of the time🤣) it’s so sweet!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so happy my shares have been helpful!! Tell me more about what you’re creating here!!😍
Such fun ages, where they're growing and learning so fast! And for mine, where the sass started showing up 🤣.
I write about collaboration, leadership, and optimism. I'm hoping that sharing stories and lessons from my time flying and leading will help others through their challenges.
Substack seems to be great for practicing my chops and finding my audience. It's the nicest little corner of the internet ☺️
I came across a video of your on YouTube and it inspired me to start my substack. I finally posted my first article recently about grief so thank you! As your videos really helped.
I love that you have shared this here as sometimes we need to pull back from creating and it's important to understand this. Often we feel like we have to show up rather then wanting to.
Rest, relaxation and nurturing ourselves and family matter. The time we get with them is so precious.
Taking time away can actually help us come back stronger. This message will definitely remind me of this when I need to take a step back.

I love hearing from likeminded creatives Marquita! Thanks for sharing what's been working for you! How long have you been creating for?

First off- thank you for your service and secondly- I love that! How old are your kiddos? I'll get that post together asap!
You're very welcome 🫡 💛

It's terrific to have a well-rounded life! Writing is merely one aspect....
Yes!! I totally agree! Thanks for sharing Dianne!

Soma I’m so glad the internet connected us and that you’re creating here! Congrats and welcome!!
YES! The “have tos” or shoulds vs. the want tos or get tos✨
It can be so hard with rest but I’m glad we’re all in this together!
